Being able to transform a Technology Operating Model to deliver more value from technology requires addressing the position of your current IT team across the wider organisation.
The Technology Team must be able to own the role of enabling value delivery through technology as their primary goal if they are to become Trusted Technology Partners through:
• Expertise in technology and in-depth knowledge
• Evaluating the suitability of emerging technologies
• Ensuring consistent delivery of value & sustained momentum
• Navigating challenging conversations
Right from the outset there is a need to facilitate the collaborative working of sometimes challenging stakeholders who are rightly focused on delivery of their piece of the strategic plan.
With this comes individual, and sometimes conflicting priorities and objectives – both team-based and individual.
Technology’s role must be to first present the importance and benefit of reaching a common value goal and then to manage the reality of competing priorities and the resulting trade-offs & concessions.
Although the physical location and age of any current technology landscape is a contributing factor to the journey and effort ahead, it is equally important to address the perception and capability of the technology team across the wider organisation.
Meaningful technology investment decisions can only be made with the agreement of all stakeholders, and work will be required with your promoters to address the concerns of detractors and keep everyone focussed on the total cost of technology ownership.
A collective commitment to the role of technology and common goal delivery will deliver sustained value, optimise investment spend and uplift organisation-wide performance.
